Semi driver killed Friday while working on vehicle on I-494 in Inver Grove Heights

A driver was killed Friday night when his semi truck pinned him while he was working on it on Interstate 494 in Inver Grove Heights, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

About 9:43 p.m., a 51-year-old man had pulled over on westbound I-494 near Babcock Trail to perform maintenance on his 2007 Freight Liner semi truck when the vehicle pinned him, according to a State Patrol report.

The driver, identified as Jay Patrick Smith, was pronounced dead at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. His hometown and further details were not provided Saturday.
